Tour de France passes the Carramore UK offices (slideshow & video)

Crowds gathered outside the Carramore offices on the route hours before the cyclists came past. First came the endless caravan of advertising vehicles, then the lead riders in the blink of an eye, and the peleton in not much more time. 6km later the riders start climbing Holme Moss, the only category 2 climb outside of the Alps.

Tour de France ‘King of the Mountains’ Red Polka Dot Jersey, not an infectious disease.

The Tour de France cycle race is the largest annual sporting event in the world, and established in 1903.

King of the mountains jerseyThe race takes place over three weeks and a distance of 3500km (2200 miles), with 22 teams of nine riders, competing for the winner’s yellow jersey. Twelve million spectators of all ages line the route to support the cyclists.
This is the fourth visit to the UK and will be the 20th grand start of Le Tour to take place outside French borders. This year the Tour de France returns to the UK for 3 stages.

The Yorkshire Grand Départ comprises two stages - Leeds to Harrogate and York to Sheffield - before the Tour moves south for a third stage from Cambridge to London.

Saturday 5th July - Stage One: Leeds - Harrogate: 190km (118 miles)
Sunday 6th July - Stage Two: York - Sheffield: 200km (125 miles)
Monday 7th July - Stage Three: Cambridge - London 159km (99 miles)

We are located on the actual route, in Thongsbridge just north of Holmfirth, in the second half of Stage 2 http://letour.yorkshire.com/stage-2. The riders are due between 14.37 and 14.58 British Summer Time (which is between 9.34 and 9.35 minutes on the hyperlapse view of this stage http://letour.yorkshire.com/stage-2/hyperlapse) However, whilst we are passed so swiftly in this view as to be invisible, this hyperlapse also misses out Holme Moss, which is where one of the Tour ‘King of the Mountains’ Red Polka Dot Jersey prizes will be awarded.

There is certainly a ‘buzz’ in the air in Yorkshire and particularly Holmfirth, and Holme Moss is expected to be one of the most visited points in the UK tour. Lots of events have been organised around ‘Le Grand Depart’ http://holmfirthevents.co.uk/calendar/category/le_tour_holmfirth/

Despite the severity of the fire that destroyed Units I and II (International arrivals & departures) on August 7th we are pleased to report that cargo services were only disrupted for a couple of days with normal service being resumed very quickly. Our consignments that week were cleared without significant problems and we were able to ship our regular weekly shipment on Friday 9th.

Passengers on the other hand will have felt the impact more deeply. As we understand it temporary facilities have been set up to accommodate International passengers in the Domestic area with Domestic passengers being dealt with in the cargo area.

Email Delivery Problems - now resolved

During a switchover to fibre optic broadband, on Monday 30th July, our ISP experienced difficulties transferring data over our line. Engineers spent a full day fixing the problems, but have still been unable to assign us a fixed address for our email gateway. This has resulted in a loss of service since Monday morning and many emails sent to us may have bounced. We have switched to an alternate system and can now send and receive emails. If you have sent an email and received a bounce back message, or if you are unsure that we have received your email, please resend and we will confirm receipt. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

DEC Donation

We at Carramore wish everyone good luck and much success in 2012.

Whilst there are difficult times ahead for many people, due to the world-wide financial crisis, life is still particularly difficult in the Horn of Africa, through war and subsequent famine. Carramore wanted to put something additional back into Africa at this time so we have made a donation to the UK Disasters Emergency Committee. This organisation is an umbrella group for a number of major charities, helping coordinate their activities in disaster situations. You can follow their work or make a donation at www.dec.org.uk
